Malaysia to Restrict Access to Social Media for Teenagers Under 16 Starting in 2026

Malaysia is preparing to introduce new regulations aimed at ensuring children’s digital safety. Beginning in 2026, Malaysian citizens under the age of 16 will be prohibited from registering on social media platforms. This was reported by the country’s Minister of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, in an interview with The Star newspaper.

According to the minister, the new measures are part of the “Madani” government’s comprehensive online safety policy and are intended to protect young people from potential risks in the digital environment. To implement these regulations, social media platforms will be required to introduce an electronic user identification system — eKYC — starting in 2026. This system is expected to ensure that online profiles are created only with verified and authentic user data.

Fahmi Fadzil made this statement after a seminar dedicated to raising awareness about cyber fraud. He noted that Malaysia is closely studying international experience; for example, Australia will introduce age restrictions for social media users next month.

— “Every country has its own approach. We aim to study their successful practices and adapt them to our national conditions,” the minister said.

This law aims to strengthen the protection of children from informational, psychological, and social risks online. The minister also called on parents to reduce their children’s screen time, encourage outdoor activities, and monitor their use of digital devices.
