Construction is underway in Egypt on a high-speed railway that will run parallel to the Suez Canal. The new railway is intended to expand freight and passenger transport between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, while also improving the country’s transport infrastructure.
As part of the first phase of the project, a 660-kilometre railway line is planned. It will connect Ain Sokhna Port on the Red Sea coast with the ports of Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean coast, passing through Egypt’s new capital.
This initiative will mark the first phase of a much larger project with a total planned length of 2,000 kilometres, covering a substantial part of the country. Once the project is fully implemented, Egypt will have a high-speed, electrified railway network.
The new transport route could expand logistical links between ports, make passenger travel easier, and strengthen transport connections between different regions of the country.
