Türkiye has introduced a process for recycling tea production waste to manufacture charcoal, insect-control products and organic fertilisers. The process uses pyrolysis, a method that decomposes organic substances at high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment.
According to a report published by Vesti Kavkaza on 12 October 2026, the information was announced by Abdülkadir Öksüz, Deputy Governor of Türkiye’s Rize Province.
He stated that three types of certified products are currently being manufactured under the Çaydalı brand. In the future, the facilities plan to produce 500–550 tonnes of charcoal per month. Production of organic fertilisers and products used to control harmful insects is also being expanded.
The products manufactured in Türkiye are attracting interest abroad as well. Germany has expressed interest in studying them, while the United Kingdom and Romania have purchased trial batches. According to Öksüz, expanding domestic production of organic fertilisers will help Türkiye reduce its dependence on imports of such products.
Another important aspect of the project is converting biological waste generated by tea production into useful products. Türkiye produces approximately 1.2 million tonnes of tea annually, of which around 70,000–100,000 tonnes consist of production waste.
Türkiye has also expressed its readiness to share its experience in this field with tea producers in Azerbaijan. The possibility of establishing joint ventures between the two countries is also under discussion.
Recycling tea production waste could help make more efficient use of natural resources, reduce waste volumes and create additional sources of products needed for agriculture.
