On April 10, 2026, a historic meeting was held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, between the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi. This meeting became a significant event aimed at raising the relations between the two sides to a new strategic level.
The main topic of the negotiations was the preparation of a new Country Programme Framework covering the years 2026–2030. This document will define the key areas of technical cooperation for the next five years. The projects implemented within the framework of the program will not be limited to scientific research but will also serve to increase safety standards and introduce innovations in various sectors of the national economy.
During the meeting, special importance was given to cooperation in the healthcare system, particularly in nuclear medicine. Currently, with the support of the IAEA, the most modern methods for diagnosing and treating oncological and other complex diseases are being used in Turkmenistan's medical institutions. As the National Leader noted, the consultations of international experts and the introduction of modern equipment help bring the quality of medical services in our country to a world-class level.
In connection with the milestone anniversaries of the signing of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia and our country's membership in the Agency, the National Leader of the Turkmen people proposed organizing a high-level regional forum in Ashgabat.
At the end of the meeting, the parties confirmed that the relations based on mutual trust will continue to prosper. Cooperation with the IAEA is not just an exchange of technology, but a concrete step aimed at ensuring a healthy, safe, and sustainable environment for future generations.
