Since the launch of the Turkmenistan–China gas pipeline in 2009, the total volume of Turkmen natural gas delivered to China reached 460 billion cubic meters as of March 1, 2026. This was announced by Qian Xiumin, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Turkmenistan, during a press briefing in Ashgabat on Friday.
"Energy cooperation remains one of the key pillars of bilateral relations. For many years, China has been the largest importer of Turkmen natural gas and one of the country's leading trade partners," the Ambassador noted.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the start of large-scale cooperation in the gas sector between the two nations. A promising direction for future cooperation is the further development of the "Galkynysh" gas field, where the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) emerged as the tender winner for the next phase.
Currently, approximately 40 billion cubic meters of Turkmen natural gas are exported annually via lines A, B, and C. After line D is fully commissioned, this volume is planned to increase to 65 billion cubic meters. In March, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a Decree authorizing the "Turkmengas" State Concern to contract "CNPC Amudarya Petroleum Company Ltd." to build a facility capable of processing 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year as part of the fourth stage of the "Galkynysh" field development.
