Barley is one of the key grain crops cultivated in the agricultural production of the Dashoguz region. This year, the region plans to produce another abundant barley harvest.
This is primarily due to the adaptability of barley to local soil and climatic conditions. Barley is considered resistant to drought and short-term frosts. At the same time, it creates favorable conditions for the reclamation of new lands.
The crop grows well even in saline soils and, to a certain extent, improves the soil composition; it is also distinguished by a growing season and high yields that suit the conditions of these areas. This year, it is planned to plant barley on an additional one thousand hectares in the region. The largest area for the crop, 350 hectares, has been allocated in the Saparmyrat Turkmenbashy district. The Koneurgench district will also serve as a major producer of barley, with a cultivation area of 250 hectares.
The importance of this crop for the region's agriculturists is immense, as it is rich in high-quality protein and starch, making it a most valuable feed for livestock. All these characteristics are the main factors necessitating the long-term cultivation of barley in large quantities and the consistent selection work carried out by the country's scientists.
