Portugal’s national team striker Cristiano Ronaldo received a straight red card in the away match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ireland.

During the game, Ronaldo was shown a red card in the 61st minute after allegedly elbowing Ireland defender Dara O’Shea. At that moment, Ireland was leading 2–0.

Despite the incident, Portugal remains at the top of Group F with 10 points. They are followed by Hungary (8 points), Ireland (7), and Armenia (3). In the final round, Portugal will host Armenia, while Ireland will play away against Hungary. Both matches are scheduled for November 16.

Ronaldo, 40, is a five-time Champions League winner, European champion, and two-time Nations League winner. He is the all-time top scorer in the history of national teams, the European Championship, the Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In December 2022, he joined Al-Nassr. Earlier in his career, he played for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Juventus, and Real Madrid. He has represented Portugal since 2003.
