Turkmen Grandmaster Wins International Tournament in Turkey

From November 9 to 15, the 9th International Chess Tournament of the Mersin Municipality was held in the Turkish city of Mersin. A total of 360 chess players from 19 countries took part in the competition, which was played according to the Swiss system. This was reported by the Chess Federation of Turkmenistan.

The tournament was held in four categories, and in the top “A” category, a brilliant victory was claimed by our compatriot, International Grandmaster Meilis Annaberdiyev (FIDE rating – 2407). He confidently scored 7 points out of 9, demonstrating excellent sporting form. Meilis achieved 5 wins and drew 4 games against players seeded in the top five.

  • Meilis Annaberdiyev (Turkmenistan)

  • International Master Arash Tahbaz (Iran, 2468) – 7 points out of 9

  • International Grandmaster Arian Gholami (Iran, 2468) – 6.5 points out of 9

It is noted that the winner of the first place was determined by an additional tie-break coefficient, in which Meilis had the advantage.

The top-seeded Azerbaijani Grandmaster Vugar Rasulov (2525) finished in 5th place.
