Turkmenistan Tightens Penalties for Speeding
Starting today, fines for traffic violations committed by drivers in Turkmenistan have been increased, according to amendments and additions to the Code of Administrative Offenses published in the central press.
Thus, for exceeding the permitted maximum speed by more than 10 but not more than 30 km/h, the fine has been increased from 0.5 to two basic units*. For exceeding the speed by more than 30 but not more than 50 km/h, the fine has been raised from three to five basic units. A repeated violation will result in a fine of seven basic units.
For exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h, the fine has been increased from seven to ten basic units. A repeated violation within six months will lead to a one-year suspension of the driver’s license.
Running a red light will now be punished with a fine of three basic units.
Violations related to improper parking or stopping of a vehicle will result in a fine equal to two basic units.
The fine for driving in a designated lane has been increased tenfold to five basic units.
Fines for operating a vehicle that has not passed state technical inspection or has unreadable license plate symbols have also been doubled.
Pedestrians are reminded that violations of traffic rules and failure to obey priority signs, road markings, or traffic light signals carry a fine of 0.4 of a basic unit. A repeated violation will result in a fine equal to one basic unit.
*Note: As of today, one basic unit for fines equals 100 manats.
