Sea buckthorn seeds found to protect blood vessels from clots

In laboratory experiments, scientists compared extracts from raw and roasted seeds. The most significant anti-clotting effect was observed with roasted seeds, which more effectively inhibited the ability of platelets to bind to collagen and fibrinogen — two key proteins involved in blood coagulation. Coagulation is a natural protective process that helps stop bleeding. However, excessive clotting can lead to dangerous conditions like stroke or heart attack due to blood vessel blockage. The main active compound identified was a flavonoid called isorhamnetin. It not only reduced platelet activation markers but also increased the time needed for clots to form, suggesting a potential role in preventing abnormal blood clotting. The researchers stress that the study was conducted in vitro — in test tubes, not in the human body. Further clinical research is needed to confirm the extract’s safety and effectiveness for human use.
