The World Bank approved a $11.7M environmental grant. Goal: reduce pollution and protect biodiversity.
A significant international step has been taken toward restoring and preserving the Caspian Sea ecosystem. The World Bank has officially approved the funding for a new project aimed at increasing the capacity of regional countries to protect the environment from pollution and preserve biological diversity. This financial package, adopted on April 8, 2026, opens a new chapter for the environmental security of the Caspian region. The "Trend" agency reported this on Monday.
The new environmental initiative will be implemented with the active participation of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. A grant of 11.74 million USD has been allocated by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the project's execution.
In addition, the World Bank plans to submit a separate project worth 8.24 million dollars to the Board of Directors for consideration. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) will serve as the coordinating and executing agencies for these projects.
The Caspian Sea Ecosystem Restoration Project consists of three strategic directions:
- Pollution Management ($3.9 million): Creating modern mechanisms to monitor waste and emissions that damage the marine environment.
- Protection of Natural Areas ($3.9 million): Developing a system of specially protected natural zones and restoring regional biodiversity.
- Systemic Management: Ensuring coordinated project operations and strengthening the institutional capacities of participating countries.
This initiative is not just financial aid; it will raise environmental diplomacy and cooperation between Caspian littoral states to a new level.
