Turkmenistan and Petronas are expanding cooperation to train a new generation of oil and gas specialists. New opportunities in education and technology are emerging.
A high-level meeting held on April 22, 2026, at the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan marked the beginning of a new stage in preparing modern specialists for the country's oil and gas industry. Minister of Education J. Gurbangeldiýew discussed specific areas of future cooperation with the Ambassador of Malaysia to Turkmenistan, Mohd Suhaimi Bin Ahmad Tajuddin, and a delegation from the "Petronas" company.
The core of the negotiations was the development of world-class professionals for the oil and gas sector. It is planned to establish direct relations between "Petronas" research centers and not only higher education institutions but also technical vocational schools.
Key Centers of Cooperation:
- Petronas University of Technology (UTP): The primary center where Turkmen youth study based on scholarship programs.
- "Alam" Maritime Education Academy: Training specialists for offshore oil and gas projects.
- Petronas Leadership Centre and Petrosains: Experience exchange with management and science-education centers.
Operating in more than 100 countries, "Petronas" prioritizes not only energy projects in Turkmenistan but also a human capital development strategy. Company representatives emphasized their readiness to share technological expertise accumulated over the years and organize short-term professional development courses for Turkmen specialists.
The established cooperation between the Yagshigeldi Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas and "Petronas" is already yielding positive results. Furthermore, the official visit of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Malaysia in 2024 provided a powerful impetus to relations in the education sector, strengthening the legal framework for cooperation between the universities of the two countries.
