Next-Generation Aircraft Engine: Testing Timeline Announced for "Open Fan" Engine

The French-American joint venture CFM International (Safran and GE Aerospace) has entered a new phase in the testing of its promising "Open Fan" aircraft engine. This technology, carried out within the framework of the EU-funded TAKE OFF project, has the potential to mark a radical turning point in aviation history. The primary difference between the "Open Fan" concept and traditional engines is the absence of a surrounding casing (nacelle) around the fan. This principle provides: - Fuel Efficiency: Reduces fuel consumption and harmful emissions by 20%. - Bypass Ratio: While this ratio is approximately 10:1 in conventional engines, the new project aims to reach a level of 60:1. This allows the engine to produce more thrust while consuming significantly less fuel. Currently, the main components of the engine have been developed, and over 400 hours of aerodynamic testing have been completed. The future roadmap for the project is as follows: - 2027: Full-scale ground tests. - 2028: Integrated technological assessments. - 2029: Initial flight tests using an Airbus A380 platform.
