On March 9, the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq officially began its operations in Turkmenistan. This move aims to boost economic cooperation, particularly in energy, trade, and logistics, following high-level discussions held in Baghdad.
The presence of Baghdad's diplomatic mission in the Turkmen capital will give a new impetus to the economic cooperation initiated during recent high-level negotiations.
On Monday, March 9, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan between Deputy Foreign Minister Serdar Muhammetdurdyyev and the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Turkmenistan, Jassim Mohammed Al-Attar. The primary reason for the meeting was the official commencement of the Iraqi diplomatic mission's operations in Ashgabat.
The opening of the Iraqi embassy is viewed as a logical outcome of the intensifying relations between the two countries. The Turkmen side confirmed its readiness to provide all possible assistance to establish the full-scale operation of the mission.
Key Areas of Cooperation:
- Diplomatic Continuity: Political consultations held in Baghdad in October 2025 gave a new momentum to the relations.
- Economic Direction: The parties aim to activate relations between business communities. Energy, trade, and logistics remain priority sectors.
- Humanitarian Dimension: Plans are in place to expand relations in the fields of science, education, and sports.
Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Iraq were established in 2009. The opening of a full-fledged embassy in Ashgabat confirms Iraq's growing interest in the Central Asian region and reinforces Ashgabat's strategic role in energy security.
