Chinese specialists are developing a project for a new wide-body passenger aircraft capable of carrying nearly 800 passengers at a time. Unlike traditional designs, the new aircraft is planned to be created according to the "flying wing" aerodynamic configuration. The project is being carried out by a scientific team from the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (CARDC). The project is seen as one of the future stages of the country's national program for creating large civil aircraft. Unlike conventional passenger planes, the "flying wing" type aircraft does not have a separate fuselage, wings, and tail section. Its main structural elements are integrated into a single lifting body. It is noted that such a design allows for increasing the aerodynamic efficiency of the aircraft and reducing fuel consumption. According to preliminary data, the width of the new aircraft will be about 85 meters, and the length will be 43 meters. The wingspan may be approximately 1.6 times larger than the wingspan of the American strategic B-2 Spirit aircraft, which was built according to a similar aerodynamic scheme. If implemented, the new project could surpass in passenger capacity the Airbus A380, which is currently one of the largest passenger aircraft in the world. While the A380 is designed for approximately 555 passengers, the new aircraft being developed by Chinese specialists is intended for about 800 passengers. The official name of the project has not been determined yet. According to Chinese aerodynamics scientist Li Yunhong, the "flying wing" structure gives the aircraft several aerodynamic advantages, allowing it to increase flight range while reducing energy consumption. A full-scale model of the aircraft has not been prepared yet. However, the project's authors are conducting tests on a scaled-down model built at a 1:52 scale. The results of previous tests show high aerodynamic performance of the model. If successfully implemented, the new aircraft could become one of the future technologies in major civil aviation intended for transporting a large number of passengers over long distances.
