China has successfully tested the S2000 airborne wind energy system, which for the first time reached an altitude of 2,000 meters and delivered electricity directly to the power grid. The tests took place in Yibin, Sichuan Province.
The system reached operational altitude in about 30 minutes, maintained stable hovering, and generated 385 kilowatt-hours of electricity during the test.
Developed by Beijing Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology, the S2000 is described as the world’s first megawatt-class airborne wind energy system designed for operation near urban areas.
By accessing stronger and more stable winds at high altitudes, the technology offers a promising new source of clean and renewable energy.
