Citizens of Turkmenistan can apply for a PhD programme in Economics at Royal Holloway, University of London in the United Kingdom. The PhD programme, which is open to international applicants, is delivered on a full-time basis and lasts four years.

The programme is primarily intended for applicants who hold a master’s degree in economics or a related field and have sufficient training in quantitative research methods. Applicants are expected to propose a promising research topic that corresponds to their academic interests and establish contact with a potential supervisor in advance.

An alternative study option is also available for applicants who do not hold a master’s degree in economics. They can continue their education through a combined MSc and PhD programme that includes both master’s and doctoral-level study.

During the first year of the doctoral programme, students receive advanced training in modern economic theory and research methods. In the following period, the main focus is placed on independent research. Within the programme, students have the opportunity to conduct research in areas such as labour economics, development economics, microeconomic theory and experimental economics.

Various forms of financial support are also available on a competitive basis for successful applicants. Some of these opportunities may cover tuition costs as well as the funds required for living expenses during the research period. Certain funding opportunities are also available to international students.

Applicants wishing to participate in the selection process are advised to first identify the main focus of their research, prepare an appropriate proposal and select an academic who could serve as their supervisor. The Department of Economics at Royal Holloway also emphasizes the importance of establishing contact with a prospective supervisor before submitting an application.

Applicants wishing to join the doctoral programme must submit their application documents by 12:00 noon UK time on December 11, 2026.

This programme provides one of the new opportunities for Turkmen specialists who wish to conduct academic research in economics and enhance their professional qualifications in an international academic environment.
