The historical Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, whose construction has been ongoing for 144 years, has become the tallest church in the world. With the placement of the Tower of Jesus atop the structure, the height of the building has reached 172.5 meters. Previously, the Ulm Minster in Germany, reaching a height of 162 meters, was considered the tallest church in the world. The official opening ceremony of the building will take place on June 10th of this year. However, construction is expected to continue until 2034.
The building is extremely complex, with a total of 18 towers in the complex. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The architect Antoni Gaudí, who began construction in 1882, passed away in 1926 before he could finish building it. Every year, millions of guests visit Barcelona to see the unfinished building. This year, Barcelona was selected as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture. The city will host the congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA).
