Japan to Limit Use of Power Banks on Aircraft Starting April

Starting from April 2026, updated aviation safety regulations will be introduced in Japan. The country's Ministry of Transport has notified airlines about restricting the use of portable batteries (power banks) on board aircraft. These measures are aimed at maintaining high standards of comfort and safety during travel.

The decision to introduce restrictions was made after analyzing several cases of battery malfunctions mid-air. Airline experience has shown that portable charging devices can become a source of smoke in the cabin. The new rules are designed to completely eliminate such incidents in the future.

Experts explain that modern lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to external influences and may become unstable over time. To prevent the risk of devices overheating, passengers are advised not to charge their gadgets. Restrictions will also apply to using on-board sockets for the power banks themselves.

In accordance with international standards, it is still forbidden to check such devices in luggage — they are only allowed in carry-on bags. Authorities advise passengers to keep batteries in an accessible place and monitor their condition throughout the flight. This will help the crew and passengers maintain a calm atmosphere on board.

For a comfortable trip, tourists are recommended to charge their devices in advance at the airport building. Airlines plan to actively inform every passenger about the updates so that they can prepare for the flight beforehand. This approach will make air travel more organized and safe.
