Dutchman Mark van Bommel has been appointed as the head coach of the Belgium national football team. This was announced by the press service of the Royal Belgian Football Association. Van Bommel will assume his duties on August 15, and his contract runs until the end of the 2028 European Championship. On July 20, the federation announced the departure of Frenchman Rudi Garcia, who had been in charge of the Belgians since January 2025. Van Bommel is 49 years old. His most recent managerial job was at the Belgian club Antwerp, which he managed from 2022 to 2024. Under his leadership, the team won the Belgian Championship, Cup, and Super Cup in 2023. That same year, the Dutch specialist was named Manager of the Season in the Belgian league. Throughout his coaching career, van Bommel has also managed Germany's Wolfsburg and the Netherlands' PSV, and worked on the coaching staffs of various age groups for the national teams of Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands. As a player, he won the Dutch championship four times with PSV, won the Spanish championship and the Champions League once with Barcelona, became the German champion twice with Bayern Munich, and won the Italian championship once with AC Milan. As part of the Netherlands national team, van Bommel won a silver medal at the 2010 World Cup.
