
On February 18, 2026, at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, a meeting was held between T. Komekov, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Italian Republic and Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to FAO, and the Director-General of the Organization, Qu Dongyu. This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
At the beginning of the meeting, Ambassador T. Komekov conveyed warm greetings on behalf of the Government of Turkmenistan to the Director-General, noted the high value placed on the Organization's work, and confirmed readiness to further develop cooperation aimed at implementing leading international practices for sustainable agricultural development and strengthening food security.
During the conversation, the results of the FAO chief's visit to Ashgabat in January 2026 were discussed. During that visit, high-level meetings were held, and an Agreement was signed on establishing a full-fledged FAO representation in Turkmenistan. It was also emphasized that the international conference "Food Security under Climate Change Conditions," held in Ashgabat on January 22, 2026, served as an important platform for developing joint approaches to creating sustainable agri-food systems.
In turn, Director-General Qu Dongyu noted the constructive nature of his visit to Ashgabat and spoke highly of his meeting with President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. He stated that Turkmenistan possesses great potential and is confidently advancing on the path of steady growth. It was emphasized that under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the country has a solid foundation to continue sustainable development and strengthen its position in the international arena.
Turkmenistan's active participation in international efforts regarding environmental protection, rational use of natural resources, and ensuring food security was noted. FAO confirmed its readiness to support Turkmenistan's initiatives within the framework of bilateral cooperation.
The parties exchanged views on the implementation of the Country Programming Framework for 2026–2030 in areas such as climate change adaptation, water resource management, and the introduction of innovations. At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties expressed their best wishes to each other.
