Microsoft has introduced a comprehensive industry action plan aimed at combating deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation. The strategy focuses on verifying the authenticity of digital content, including images, videos, and text.
The framework combines three core technologies: digital watermarks, metadata tracking, and unique mathematical fingerprints assigned to each file. Together, these tools help platforms identify whether content has been altered and trace its origin.
Microsoft tested 60 different combinations of these methods, simulating scenarios where metadata was removed or files were partially edited. The results showed that only an integrated approach provides reliable content labeling.
Importantly, the system does not determine whether information is true — it only verifies authenticity and modification history.
