Scientists at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) have developed a novel method enabling the production of eco-friendly hydrogen. The new technology utilizes desert sand, biochar derived from date pits, and nickel.

The researchers aimed to utilize accessible natural resources and agricultural waste to generate a clean energy source. Scientists tested 30 different mixture compositions across various ratios to identify the optimal formula.

Research results determined that the most effective blend consists of 42.5% sand, 42.5% biochar, and 15% nickel. Biochar prepared from date pits increases the material's porosity and promotes the even distribution of nickel across its surface, enhancing the mixture's chemical activity.

Initial laboratory tests conducted at temperatures between 500–600°C demonstrated that the new material can split methane to extract hydrogen. According to the scientists, this technology holds potential in the future to reduce production costs and transform agricultural waste into a valuable product.

In the next phase, the research team plans to examine the long-term durability of the developed material and test its efficiency under prolonged continuous operating conditions.

This novel approach opens up new prospects for producing hydrogen—a promising energy source—by leveraging sand resources abundant in desert regions alongside agricultural waste.
