OpenAI is expanding from software to hardware products. The Information reports that OpenAI has formed a research team of about 200 people to develop consumer AI devices, including a smart speaker without a screen but equipped with a camera. The target price is $200–$300, with shipments expected no earlier than February 2027.
This move marks a significant step after OpenAI’s collaboration with former Apple designer Jonathan Ive, which began in September 2025. The companies are working on multimodal AI devices, such as smart glasses, AI headphones, styluses, and smart lights, planned for release by the end of 2026.
OpenAI is entering the smart home market, competing with giants like Amazon Echo, leveraging its experience in large language models to create devices with natural voice interaction and deeper understanding of everyday life.
