State Language is Being Established in Kazakhstan

In the draft of Kazakhstan's new Constitution, the Kazakh language is clearly and definitively established as the state language. According to the "Kazinform" news agency, Zhandos Shaimardanov, Director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, announced this during a meeting of the commission on constitutional reforms. He noted that several citizens had paid attention to the issue regarding the status of the state language in the Basic Law. "However, it is very important to emphasize that in the draft of the new Constitution, the Kazakh language is clearly and definitively established as the state language," Shaimardanov said. As a reminder, on January 31, the commission on constitutional reforms presented the draft of Kazakhstan's new Constitution to the public. The first draft of the new Basic Law consists of a preamble, 11 sections, and 95 articles. The amendments and additions affect 84% of the Constitution's text. The main directions of the reforms include the transition to a unicameral parliament — the Kurultai, the creation of the office of Vice President, and the establishment of the People's Council (Halk Geňeşi). The Republic of Kazakhstan remains a unitary state, while the form of government is defined as a Presidential Republic.
