The Republic of Turkey has introduced new regulations facilitating living conditions for foreign youth who have completed their higher education in Turkey. According to the new decision, an opportunity has been created to extend the short-term residence permit granted to international graduates for an additional year.
This decision was adopted by the Council of Higher Education of Turkey (YÖK) with the aim of expanding post-graduation opportunities for international graduates within the country.
The residence permit duration can be extended up to two years
The new procedure is based on the relevant provisions of Law No. 6458 on "Foreigners and International Protection."
Accordingly, foreign nationals who have obtained higher education in Turkey can, upon applying within six months following their graduation, extend their previously issued one-year short-term residence permit for another year.
Thus, the total duration of an international graduate's residence permit in Turkey can reach up to two years.
New opportunities are being created
According to YÖK data, this decision will help international graduates continue their professional development in Turkey, participate in master's and doctoral programs, and engage in research activities.
The new regulation provides international graduates with the opportunity to:
enhance professional experience;
utilize opportunities in the labor market;
continue higher education development;
integrate into Turkey's scientific and academic environment.
Current graduates can also benefit
The new facilitation applies not only to new applicants but also to international graduates who currently hold a one-year short-term residence permit.
They can submit relevant documents before the expiration of the permit or within 90 days following its expiration, and obtain an additional one-year residence permit provided they fulfill the legal requirements.
Turkey's position as an international educational center is strengthening
According to experts, the new decision will expand the opportunities for foreign youth educated in Turkey to stay in the country after graduation, utilize employment opportunities, and advance professionally.
This step is evaluated as one of the important initiatives aimed at raising Turkey's prestige as an international education center, creating more favorable conditions for foreign students, and developing international relations through education.
