On March 9, 2026, at the Assembly of the Republic building in Lisbon, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to France and Portugal, Maksat Charyyev, attended the official inauguration ceremony of the new President of the Portuguese Republic, António José Seguro.
António José Seguro became the first socialist elected to the country's presidency in the last 20 years.
In the first round of elections held on January 18, 2026, Seguro took first place, securing approximately 31% of the votes. However, since no candidate surpassed the required 50% threshold, a second round of elections was scheduled. In it, Seguro competed against André Ventura, the leader of the far-right "Chega" party.
In the second round held on February 8, Seguro won with 66,7% of the votes. His opponent, André Ventura, received 33,3%. Consequently, Seguro became the candidate to receive the highest number of votes in the history of presidential elections in Portugal.
