The national team of Turkmenistan has started its performances at the 20th Summer Asian Games held in Nagoya, Japan. The major Asian sports forum brings together about 10.8 thousand athletes from 45 countries competing for 469 sets of medals across 43 sports.
At the opening ceremony of the Asian Games, the State Flag of Turkmenistan was carried across the "Paloma Mizuho" Stadium by Muhammet Jumamyradow, a candidate for master of sports in wushu. The national delegation of Turkmenistan consists of a total of 57 people. Of these, 34 athletes are defending the country's sports honor in eight sports. Turkmen athletes are competing in boxing, wrestling, karate, kurash, athletics, swimming, weightlifting, and wushu.
In the first days of the competition, Turkmen athletes achieved several results. Wushu-sanda: Merjen Jurayeva, competing in the up to 60 kg weight category, successfully advanced to the quarterfinals. She defeated Rita Takulla from Nepal with a score of 2:0. Karate: Rayan Gurbanmyradow, competing in the up to 60 kg weight category, won his first match against Filipino John Christian Lachican with a score of 6:1. However, he lost to the athlete from Malaysia in the quarterfinals. Swimming: 15-year-old Alan Mukhin finished first in his heat in the 50m freestyle qualifying event with a time of 23.91 seconds, ranking 29th overall. David Hakobyan also took first place in his group in the 100m breaststroke qualifying heat with a time of 1:04.72, placing 26th in the final list. Boxing: Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedow, a bronze medalist of the previous Asian Games, lost to Bahrain's representative Ali Abdalla by a split decision of judges with a score of 1:4 in the up to 70 kg weight category.
The Asian Games in Nagoya will run until October 4. In the coming days, Turkmenistan's representatives in wrestling, weightlifting, and athletics will also join the competition for medals.
