On Turkmenistan’s initiative, the “Year of International Law” will be held in 2028, with several preparatory activities scheduled in 2026. According to the “Watan” news program, this was highlighted in the report by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov at the latest Cabinet of Ministers meeting held in digital format.
It was noted that Turkmenistan actively promotes important initiatives within the UN on regional and international issues on the global development agenda and participates actively in their implementation. At the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, the President of Turkmenistan proposed specific measures aimed at strengthening global peace and security, sustainable development, transport and energy, environmental protection, climate change, humanitarian issues, and multilevel cooperation within international law. In this context, the President’s initiative to declare 2028 as the “Year of International Law” is of special importance.
A draft plan has been prepared in cooperation with the relevant government agencies. The plan envisages conducting activities for the proclamation of the “Year of International Law,” designating the UN Secretariat’s Office of Legal Affairs as a key partner, submitting a draft resolution at the UN General Assembly session, and preparing the Concept “International Law and Turkmenistan’s Neutrality.”
Furthermore, during the year, regional and international events, scientific-practical conferences, forums, briefings, and other activities dedicated to international law will be held both in Turkmenistan and abroad. To enhance legal knowledge, training and methodological materials for schools and universities will be developed with the participation of local and international experts and disseminated through mass media. Competitions among youth on scientific research and essays related to international law will also be held to identify and support talented young people, stimulate research, and generate interest in international law.
To raise public awareness about the “Year of International Law,” a dedicated section will be created on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and informational materials will be prepared and distributed.
After reviewing the report, the President of Turkmenistan approved the proposal and instructed the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to implement the relevant activities.
