Turkmenistan has proposed declaring 2028 the “Year of International Law” within the United Nations framework. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov during his speech at the 2026 World Government Summit.
“The purpose of this initiative is to strengthen and restore the existing legal foundation, ensuring its comprehensive and indivisible nature,” Meredov said.
The minister emphasized: “We see 2028 and its preparatory period as an opportunity for a broad dialogue on the role of international law amid global transformations, shifts in the balance of power, and emerging forms of conflicts, as well as for reinforcing the legal basis for preventive diplomacy and peaceful dispute resolution.”
According to R. Meredov, this also allows for better advance planning for partnership cooperation, enhancing mutual trust and clarity of commitments. The announcement was published on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
