Based on the play by Uzbek playwright Sanjar Imamov, the musical comedy "Super Mother-in-Law" (Super gaýyn ene) has remained one of the most popular performances in the repertoire of the Magtymguly National Music and Drama Theater for several years.
Despite the considerable time since its premiere, every showing of the play consistently draws a full house. The secret of this enduring success lies in the similarity of spiritual values between the Turkmen and Uzbek peoples, the unwavering respect for elders in the family, and humorous life stories that resonate deeply with the audience.
The core of the stage work is built around eternal conflicts within a large family. The main character—the domineering mother-in-law, Haja—is consumed by a desire to live more opulently than her neighbors and decides to marry her son, Merdan, a second time to a wealthy businesswoman. To maintain family harmony and teach his mother a lesson without offending her, the characters organize a clever ruse.
The son, the daughter-in-law, and even an invited mulla stage a fake wedding game and move Haja into a beautiful house. However, the protagonist soon realizes that outward wealth and modern renovations cannot replace the warmth of her former home. The story's conclusion emphasizes the importance of cherishing parents and the value of wisdom that can resolve family disagreements without resentment.
Director Nury Hudaygulyýew's creative vision gives the play a special vibrancy. Having studied in Tashkent and being deeply familiar with the life and mentality of the neighboring people, the stage master succeeded in creating very lively and recognizable characters. The music by composer Derkar Jelilow and the dynamic choreography by Jemal Bazarowa harmoniously complement the performance, conveying a cheerful spirit to the audience.
The most symbolic moment of the play is the finale, where three elderly women transform into young dancers. This signifies the triumph of humor and good-natured play over life's difficulties.
The talented cast contributed significantly to the play's success. The role of the energetic Haja was convincingly portrayed by Honored Artist of Turkmenistan Aýsoltan Kowusowa, while the roles of the son and daughter-in-law were brought to life by Oraz Orazow and Nurgözel Gurbangeldiýewa.
The creative team managed to create not just a comedy, but a moving story showing that true family happiness lies in harmony and love rather than material wealth. The high level of audience interest confirms that true art, understood by all, knows no borders and maintains its significance through all times.
