The majority of residents of the Canadian province of Alberta supported the region remaining part of the country. This is shown by the preliminary results of a referendum held on 21 October, according to The Guardian.

More than 23% of those who voted supported independence for Alberta, a province rich in oil and other natural resources. Meanwhile, 76% of voters favoured Alberta remaining part of Canada.

According to The Guardian, the preliminary referendum results represented an important outcome for Canada’s head of government and those supporting the country’s territorial unity.

Among the supporters of Alberta’s independence are some US political figures, including Donald Trump.
