Apple is changing its annual smartphone release cycle for the first time in over a decade. In 2026, the standard iPhone 18 will not be launched. Instead, only premium models—iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone—are expected to be announced in the fall. The standard iPhone 18 and other available models will only be released in spring 2027, according to MacRumors.
This means that the current iPhone 17 will remain the main entry-level model for more than 18 months. The production shift is related to the expansion of the lineup: by the end of 2026, at least eight different iPhone models, including iPhone 16e, iPhone Air, and older generations, may be on sale simultaneously. Splitting releases will allow Apple to distribute products, extend the lifecycle of each model, reduce internal competition, and evenly distribute sales throughout the fiscal year.
The new approach also has logistical advantages. A stretched production schedule helps avoid bottlenecks, improves the supply of advanced technology components, and balances revenue across quarters.
Therefore, Apple’s traditional September event in 2026 will focus exclusively on the premium segment, marking a new era in the company’s strategy.
