China's railway network handled 2.8 billion passenger trips in the first seven months of 2026. This figure is 4.1 percent higher compared to the corresponding period of last year and was recorded as a historical record for January–July. According to the data of the China Railway Corporation, an average of 11,462 passenger trains operated daily on the country's railways in the first seven months of the year. This is 571 trains per day, or 5.2 percent more compared to last year. The continuous expansion of the high-speed railway network, the commissioning of new routes and railway stations had an important impact on the growth of passenger traffic. In particular, the commissioning of new sections on the routes connecting Xi'an in central China with Xian (Shaanxi) in the northwest of the country, as well as Lanxi and Jiande in eastern Zhejiang province, has enhanced the transport accessibility of the regions. China's railway network is also generating growing interest among foreign tourists. In January–July, the country's railways served nearly 15 million trips by foreign tourists. This figure increased by 32.5 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year. Currently, China has the largest high-speed railway network in the world. The total length of high-speed railways exceeds 50,000 kilometers. The construction of new routes continues in the country, and by the end of the year, it is planned to bring the length of the high-speed railway network to 55,000 kilometers. High-speed trains have become one of the main modes of travel between China's cities. According to official data, in the first six months of 2026, the share of high-speed railways in total passenger transport reached 78 percent. The expansion of railway infrastructure not only reduces travel time between cities, but also strengthens the transport interconnectedness of the country's various regions. The increase in the number of passenger trips and foreign tourists demonstrates the growing importance of China's railway network in domestic and international tourism.
