Russia’s first artificial liver is being developed in Moscow: a system meant to temporarily perform the functions of a damaged organ. Clinical trials of the technology are planned to begin in 2027. This was reported by Anatoly Garbuzov, head of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy.

The development is being carried out by the Artcellence plant together with scientists from one of the country’s leading research institutes. The device is intended to filter blood, support metabolism and provide protein synthesis, that is, to take over the liver’s main functions when a patient’s own organ cannot cope.

The technology is expected to help patients wait for a transplant or give a damaged liver time to recover. Production of the system is planned at a site in Moscow’s special economic zone.
