Melon growing is one of the important directions of the agricultural traditions of the Turkmen people, rooted deep in centuries. A wide variety of melons are cultivated in Turkmenistan. According to their ripening period, growing features, and mass planting period, melons are divided into four seasonal groups. The first of these groups includes early-ripening melon varieties of the "handelek" type. These melons mainly ripen in June–July. On average, it takes 60–65 days for them to grow and fully ripen. When early melons are planted in early April, they ripen approximately 20–25 days earlier than summer melons. As a result, they are delivered to the population as the first harvest of the new melon season. The peculiarity of this type of melon is not only in their early ripening. They also stand out for their pleasant taste, original appearance, and unique size. Moreover, the storage and transport characteristics of early-ripening melons differ from other types, making their timely harvesting of great importance. It is not recommended to plant early-ripening melons at later dates. This is because their biological characteristics and ability to yield a high-quality harvest are closely related to specific planting periods. The division of Turkmen melons into seasonal groups allows farmers to correctly plan crop areas, harvest at different periods, and increase the efficiency of melon production. Such rich diversity demonstrates the suitability of the Turkmen land for melon growing and our people's many years of experience in this field.
