By the end of August 2026, the number of sunspots forming on the surface of the Sun had decreased threefold compared with the same period in 2024. This indicates that solar activity has been declining over the past two years.
According to “Lenta.news”, citing data from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 216 sunspots were recorded on the Sun in August 2024, while by the end of August 2026 the figure had fallen to 76.
According to astronomers, the largest number of sunspots on the surface of the Sun was recorded in the middle of the last century. The lowest figure was observed in the first half of the 19th century.
Scientists say that no powerful solar flares capable of causing strong geomagnetic storms on Earth are expected in the near future.
Two days ago, it was also reported that the first geomagnetic storms of the autumn season had begun on Earth.
