Turkmenistan ranked first among Central Asian countries in terms of the population’s level of English proficiency. In the “EF English Proficiency Index 2025”, which covers countries where English is not the native language, Turkmenistan placed 91st globally. This result is the highest among the countries of the region.
In the ranking, the Kyrgyz Republic took 101st place, Uzbekistan ranked 104th, Kazakhstan 107th, and Tajikistan 110th.
Turkmenistan’s leading position among regional countries indicates a growing interest in learning English and expanding opportunities for mastering the language within the country. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the state policy aimed at teaching foreign languages to the younger generation.
The Netherlands topped the ranking. Croatia, Austria, Germany, and Norway were also included in the top five.
It should be noted that the “EF English Proficiency Index” is based on the results of the free online “EF SET” (Standard English Test), taken by millions of people worldwide. The test primarily assesses listening and reading skills. In the 2025 report, for the first time, not only reading and listening but also speaking and writing skills were measured using artificial intelligence, indicating that both theoretical knowledge and practical use of English were evaluated.
