
An important step is being taken in Turkmenistan to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and strengthen the digital economy. It is planned to establish a Competence Center in the field of AI based at the «Turkmentelecom» state telecommunications company.
This was announced by the Minister of Communications of Turkmenistan, Hajymyrat Hudaygulyyev, at the session «Digital Future: General Directions of Development, Threats, and Solutions» held within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).
Main tasks of the Center:
The Minister noted that AI-based solutions are already being implemented in various sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and transport. Currently, pilot projects are being planned with international partners for managing transport and logistics corridors, forecasting in the oil and gas sector, and efficient use of water resources in agriculture.
The report noted that over the past three years, the capacity of international internet channels in the country has increased 10-fold. It was also emphasized that Turkmenistan is implementing strategic projects that will create new high-speed digital routes between Europe and Asia. These include the construction of a fiber-optic communication system along the Serhetabat – Herat route and projects for laying underwater cables across the Caspian Sea.
These steps will give a significant boost to the development of Turkmenistan's digital economy, Big Data, and cybersecurity systems at the international level.
