Turkmenistan’s plans to modernize transport infrastructure and develop renewable energy align with the priorities of the European Investment Bank (EIB). This was stated by Olivier Cueny, Head of the EIB Regional Representation for Central Asia, in an interview with the "Trend" agency.
According to the head of the bank's regional office, such initiatives demonstrate the EIB's position focused on developing climate-resilient economies.
Olivier Cueny mentioned that, in practice, priority in financing is given to projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and encourage the use of clean technologies.
He noted that the EIB operates in Central Asia within the framework of the "Global Gateway" initiative, in line with the European Union's priorities. This includes the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor (Middle Corridor), digital connectivity, clean energy and water management projects, as well as initiatives related to critical raw materials.
Olivier Cueny emphasized that Turkmenistan, with its access to the Caspian Sea, is a vital part of the Middle Corridor. He also stated that developing rail and road infrastructure, renewing existing facilities, and further modernizing the port could help reduce the time and costs of freight transport between regions, thereby promoting trade expansion and economic growth.
The European Investment Bank also assesses the long-term sustainability of projects, paying special attention to governance transparency, environmental analysis, and stakeholder engagement. This approach is aimed at ensuring stable economic results while meeting environmental requirements.
