On 29 October 2026, the 93rd meeting of the Council of Commanders of Border Troops of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. A delegation representing Turkmenistan’s border authorities also took part in the meeting.
The event brought together heads of the border services of CIS member states, as well as representatives of the principal executive, law enforcement and counterterrorism bodies of the CIS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
The participants discussed issues related to strengthening security along the external borders of CIS countries, combating cross-border crime and expanding cooperation in relevant areas.
Particular attention was paid to information security. Nurlan Seitimov, Deputy Secretary General of the CIS, noted that the adoption by the heads of state in Turkmenistan on 9 October of the Fundamentals of the CIS Information Policy in the Border Sphere marked a qualitatively new stage in cooperation.
According to him, the approval of this strategic document will make it possible to consistently coordinate efforts to counter modern hybrid threats and establish a unified, secure information space along the external borders of the Commonwealth.
