Afghanistan Plans New Regional Railway Project with Turkmenistan's Participation
The government of Afghanistan has begun developing the concept of a "Ring Railway System" to elevate economic ties between Central and South Asia to a new level. This mega-project aims to unite five regional states—Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Pakistan—into a single logistic chain.
Main Goals and Significance of the Project: According to the Minister of Industry and Commerce of Afghanistan, Nuriddin Azizi, this initiative is not just about building roads but about filling the gaps in the region's transport infrastructure. The implementation of the project will:
- Ensure seamless trade turnover between Central and South Asia.
- Reduce cargo transportation time and lower costs.
- Strengthen Afghanistan's role as a transit corridor.
The project will not start from scratch; it will be based on existing routes connecting Afghanistan's four major ports with Central Asia and Iran. The already existing Kerki–Ymamnazar–Akina and Serhetabat–Turgundy railway lines are considered vital segments of this new ring.
Currently, consultations regarding financial sources and specific construction timelines are ongoing. This initiative is seen as a significant step toward Afghanistan emerging as a stable partner in regional trade and modernizing its infrastructure.
