Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the company is resuming work on Dojo3, the third generation of its in-house supercomputer. The project had been paused last year as Tesla focused on developing AI chips designed to run autonomous driving systems directly in its vehicles.
The Dojo project is designed to process video data and telemetry collected from Tesla cars to train the neural networks behind Full Self-Driving (FSD). Previously, Musk stated that it made little sense for Tesla to scale two very different AI chip projects in parallel.
However, in-vehicle AI chips such as AI5 and AI6 are primarily optimized for inference rather than large-scale neural network training. The AI6 chips will be manufactured by Samsung at its Texas facility under a $16 billion agreement with Tesla.
Musk also suggested that Dojo3 could become a space-based project, proposing orbital data centers as an alternative to ground-based infrastructure. Potential advantages include access to solar energy and lower temperatures, although experts remain skeptical.
