xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has acquired a third building to expand the computing infrastructure required for training its artificial intelligence system Grok. The new facility has been named MACROHARDRR.
The purchase of the additional building will allow the total computing capacity of the Colossus 2 supercomputer cluster to increase to nearly 2 gigawatts. In this context, the figure refers not to performance measured in FLOPS, but to the overall electrical power consumption of the computing system.
Parts of the Colossus 2 supercomputer, already considered the largest in the world, will be installed at the new location. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand the cluster to one million graphics processing units (GPUs), an unprecedented scale for AI infrastructure.
According to The Information, xAI plans to begin converting the newly acquired warehouse into a full-scale data center in 2026. It is noted that both the new data center and Colossus 2 are located near a natural gas–powered power plant being built by xAI in the area, as well as close to other energy sources.
However, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has raised concerns among environmental organizations. Critics point to the extremely high energy consumption of data centers and their potential impact on the environment.
Previously, in September, xAI announced plans to scale the Colossus supercomputer to 1.21 GW of computing power, and the current plans indicate a further acceleration in the development of the Grok AI platform.
