The National Bank of Kazakhstan has introduced a new silver coin called “Aqyq”, decorated with traditional national patterns and carnelian. In addition to serving as currency, the coin is designed to be worn around the neck as a piece of jewellery. MilliInfo reports this, citing the TASS news agency.
The design allows the new coin to be used in two ways. For this purpose, a special hole has been made in its upper section so that a chain or cord can be threaded through it.
The name “Aqyq” comes from the Kazakh word “ақық”. It refers to minerals belonging to the chalcedony group, including carnelian, which are used in jewellery making.
The coin was produced at the Kazakhstan Mint from 925 sterling silver. It weighs 20 grams and has a diameter of 3.3 centimetres. The coin is decorated with traditional national patterns and carnelian. Its mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces.
The “Aqyq” coin has a face value of 1,000 Kazakhstani tenge, equivalent to approximately 2 US dollars. According to the National Bank of Kazakhstan, despite its collectible and decorative appeal, the coin remains legal tender. Accordingly, it must be accepted at its face value for various types of transactions throughout the country.
Sales of the new coin are expected to begin on October 27 through the official online store of the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
