To win the election, countries were required to secure a two-thirds majority of the votes from member states, which is 127 votes.
The Security Council consists of 15 countries. Five of them — the United Kingdom, China, Russia, the United States, and France — are permanent members with veto power. The remaining ten members are elected for a two-year term.
At the end of 2026, the terms of five non-permanent members — Greece, Denmark, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia — will conclude. The countries elected today will replace them.
