Liverpool have decided not to allow Andy Robertson to leave for Tottenham Hotspur during the current transfer window, despite talks taking place between the two Premier League clubs.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham had been in discussions with Liverpool over a permanent deal for the Scotland international, whose contract expires this summer. Spurs believed an agreement was close and expected the move to be completed after Liverpool’s Champions League home match against Qarabag. However, the transfer was always dependent on Liverpool securing a replacement — something the club has been unable to do.
After assessing the situation, Liverpool opted to retain Robertson, prioritising squad stability amid growing defensive concerns. The 31-year-old vice-captain remains an important part of Arne Slot’s plans for the remainder of the season.
Liverpool explored alternatives, including recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma to provide cover for first-choice left-back Milos Kerkez. Any such move would require Roma to find a replacement, and negotiations remain unresolved. Roma sporting director Frederic Massara confirmed that talks with Liverpool regarding Tsimikas had taken place.
Tottenham initially viewed Robertson as a free-agent target for the summer but accelerated their interest following Ben Davies’ ankle fracture. Despite the speculation, Robertson has not pushed for a move and demonstrated his commitment by featuring as a half-time substitute in Liverpool’s recent 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth.
Liverpool are currently facing multiple defensive issues. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni have been ruled out for the season with knee injuries, Joe Gomez was forced off with a hip injury, and Ibrahima Konaté has recently been absent following a family bereavement.
Liverpool now expect Robertson to remain at Anfield until the end of the season, when his contract expires. Since joining from Hull City in 2017 for £10 million, he has made 364 appearances for the club.
