
On January 30, the fifth meeting of the Joint Turkmen–Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management was held in the city of Khiva. The Turkmen side was headed by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan T. Atahallyyev, while the Uzbek side was led by Advisor to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Agricultural Development Sh. Ganiyev. This was reported by the foreign policy agency.
The meeting was attended by heads and representatives of ministries and agencies of both countries responsible for water resource management, irrigation, and environmental protection.
In their speeches, the co-chairs emphasized the high level of Turkmen–Uzbek relations based on the principles of good neighborliness, mutual trust, equality, and consideration of the national interests of both sides. They noted a shared commitment to expanding and deepening effective cooperation not only in the water management sector, but also in economic, infrastructural, and humanitarian fields.
The parties also highlighted the strategic importance of sustainable and mutually beneficial cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan in water resource management for ensuring food security, achieving sustainable agricultural development, and strengthening socio-economic stability in the region.
During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the introduction of modern technologies for the rational use of water resources, improving water monitoring and accounting mechanisms, as well as further enhancing the capacity of water sector specialists. Particular attention was given to issues of climate change adaptation and reducing the risks it poses to sustainable water supply.
The sides reaffirmed their commitment to holding regular bilateral consultations, meetings of the intergovernmental commission, and joint events, as well as to further strengthening the legal and institutional framework of cooperation.
The meeting was held in an active and constructive atmosphere, clearly demonstrating the consistent and systematic nature of the Turkmen–Uzbek strategic dialogue. At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties signed the Protocol of the fifth meeting of the Joint Turkmen–Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management.
