
On February 25, 2026, a meeting was held between V. Hajiyev, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office in Geneva, and Martin Chungong, the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
During the meeting, the Turkmen side confirmed Turkmenistan's readiness to act as the host country for the 16th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament and officially delivered letters sent by the Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan to the leadership of the Union. The holding of this forum is considered one of the important stages in implementing the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to declare 2028 as the International Year of International Law, proposed within the framework of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union accepted this initiative with gratitude and expressed full support for Turkmenistan's intention to host the upcoming Summit. It was noted that the initiative to declare 2028 the International Year of International Law is very timely and fully responds to the vital needs of the modern world community to strengthen the rule of law, institutional stability, and inclusive development.
The parties paid special attention to the growing role of Central Asian states in developing inter-parliamentary dialogue in the region. It was emphasized that Turkmenistan's activity in the international arena contributes to strengthening peace through the tools of parliamentary diplomacy and promoting a constructive cooperation agenda.
At the end of the meeting, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in further deepening the partnership and agreed to maintain close contacts as part of the preparations for the upcoming Summit.
