The eMagin division, part of Samsung Display, showcased its latest technology at the Display Week exhibition in Los Angeles: waveguide lenses capable of displaying video directly on transparent surfaces. This technology provides a major boost to the future of smart glasses, enabling users to watch YouTube videos and make video calls while looking through transparent lenses.
Features and Working Principle The new lenses utilize OLED microdisplays from eMagin, a company acquired by Samsung. The core feature is its waveguide structure: microdisplays are hidden in the rim of the glasses and transmit the image through the edges of the lens. Tiny, invisible gratings then direct the light toward the user's eye, ensuring the lenses remain completely transparent.
The technical specifications of these lenses significantly surpass current market standards:
Furthermore, these lenses maintain 99% of color accuracy. For example, while Meta's Ray-Ban glasses use similar technology, they only cover about 20% of the field of view. Samsung's new technology promises a much wider and clearer image.
